Student Wellness Resources
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health.
The good news is there are practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency – and there are ways that everyone can be supportive of friends, family, and co-workers who are struggling with life’s challenges or their mental health.
Please take a look at the lesson on self-care and coping skills as well as the google folder with coping skills resources.

During these uncertain times, managing our mental well-being is crucial. We all deal with stress differently, here are some signs that you may need additional support:
• Feelings of numbness, disbelief, anxiety or fear.
• Changes in appetite, energy, and activity levels.
• Difficulty concentrating.
• Difficulty sleeping or nightmares and upsetting thoughts and images.
• Physical reactions, such as headaches, body pains, stomach problems, and skin rashes.
• Worsening of chronic health problems.
• Anger or short-temper.
Ways to cope with stress
• Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
• Take care of your body.
• Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate
• Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
• Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
• Develop daily routines
• Make time to unwind – try to do some other activities you enjoy.
• Connect with others – talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
If you have previously been diagnosed with anxiety/depression, be sure to continue with your treatment/therapy during this time and seek help when needed. For more information, please see the attachment on coping with stress.

Feeling good about the future is important for our happiness. Although much of the future is unknown right now, you do have control over some aspects of your life, like creating goals for yourself. We all need goals to motivate us and these need to be challenging enough to excite us and keep us going every day. Choosing ambitious but realistic goals gives our lives direction and brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we achieve them.
Wellness Wednesday Message:
SELF-CARE:
Make a list of three goals for the next few weeks and the steps you can take to achieve them. How to get started? Here is a great guide to create your wellness vision and goal setting.
KINDNESS CHALLENGE:
